The Fish Forever team were honoured to be invited for a hui at Waitangi marae last week on Friday 9 Sept. We enjoyed a night of frank, open discussion about the nature of marine protection in Northland and ways of working together for a better future for Tangaroa.
It was an optimistic and moving hui for the Fish Forever team - a first-time experience for a number of us. The hapu representatives were similarly engaged and we all left believing there is hope that something really positive will emerge out of the dialogue. Photos below show an after-breakfast shot (matchsticks aplenty -- it was a long night) and a lesson in making fish out of pieces of tape; not sure whether I am teaching Whaia Maraea here or she is teaching me.
